The innovators’ Showcase is a platform for the alumni and the campus commnity of IIT Bombay to showcase technologically innovative research that are relevant to the 8 SIGs of GBF. Manilal Savla Manilal Savla has worked as a scientist and polymer consultant. After BTech from IITB in1967 he earned ME in USA. He was the first Director of the Gujarat Industrial Research and Development Agency in Vadodara during 1983-1986. He has authored scores of publications including book chapters and four US patents. Practical solution for looming water crisis using smart superabsorbent polymers (SAP) for low energy desalination by forward osmosis and harvesting water from rain and dew.
Dr. Kamal Kishore Khatri, Dr. Kamal Kishore Khatri was born on 30th June, 1975 at Jodhpur, Rajasthan, India. He passed his bachelor of engineering in Mechanical Engineering in 1999 from M.B.M. Engineering College, Jodhpur, India. He worked in industry for two years in the field of production and maintenance engineering. Then he completed his M. Tech. (Mechanical Engineering) with specialization in Thermal and Fluids Engineering from IIT Bombay, Mumbai, India in 2004. He did his Ph.D. from M.N.I.T. Jaipur, India in January 2011.After completing master’s degree, he joined teaching profession as lecturer in Mechanical Engineering and he has been serving for last 10 years in engineering teaching. Presently he is working as Associate Professor and Head, Dept. of Mechanical-Mechatronics Engineering at The LNM Institute of Information Technology Jaipur (LNMIIT). Farmers in the neighborhood have been able to take 2 or 3 crops in a year.” A novel underground water harvesting structure resembling a milk can in rural Maharashtra (near Manmad) to utilize normally uncultivated agricultural land more efficiently for better crops yield.

Rajaram Desai Rajaram is a B. Tech in Chem. Eng from IIT Bombay. He has worked in research and development for companies like HUL and also contributed to social initiatives e.g. Tanda and Pani Panchayat, documentaries made by TISS. After working in IT sector in USA for 15 years, he joined CTARA, IIT Bombay and has been working in drinking water and livelihood security for last three years. Abbas Khan Dr. Abbas Khan, an alumnus of IIT Bombay and founder & CEO of ZaaK Technologies GmbH, has developed a unique patent-pending technology transforming fly ash out of coal-fired stations into well defined, high quality lightweight engineered sand (smart sand or ZaaKSand™) with positive effects in energy efficiency of buildings and smart cities. The company recently has been awarded as one of the top innovations in the DST-Lockheed India Innovation Growth Programme 2015. The technology offers a single-step solution to both fly ash disposal problem as well as sand mining problem. Replacing normal sand with ZaaKSand™ in buildings improve thermal efficiency factor up to 400%. Being ~50% lighter than sand, this results in improved structural efficiency, vertical urbanization, reduced seismic forces and lower transportation costs. Nitin Kumar Gupta Nitin is an alumnus of IIT Bombay, and University of Maryland, USA. He has been involved in research on control and automation of drones for over a decade. As the Founder and CEO of NavStik, Nitin has setup a multidisciplinary team of highly motivated and talented young engineers, who are building platforms (electronics and software) for drone manufacturers. NavStik has consistently been ranked as one of the most promising startups of Pune. NavStik is seed-funded by Venture Center, Pune. We build the “brains” (electronics hardware and software) of the drones. Ramgopal Rao The soil moisture/temperature sensor system features in house developed, low cost soil moisture sensor, soil temperature sensor, relative humidity sensor, and ambient temperature sensor and energy efficient wireless transmission for agricultural application. The system is powered by the solar with rechargeable battery and can measure the soil moisture with an accuracy of ± 3%. Different techniques have been used to measure the soil moisture. The DPHP(Dual Pulse heat probe) and capacitive based sensors are designed for in field application whereas the TDR (Time domain Reflectometer) sensor is used for the laboratory purpose. The developed sensor systems are low cost compared to the commercially available products from US and Europe based companies. Based on these parameters, one can model any type of soil and the crop growth based on the data provided by agricultural labs. This can add smartness to the system. The output of this sensor can be used to control the pumps and hence irrigation can be automated. The farmers can get SMS about the next irrigation cycle.

Deepak Malani Amaldev and Deepak are co-founders of ACPAD Instruments. They bring in electronic and embedded system design R&D experience. Their first product is a new music instrument for guitarists, that has been designed, developed and manufactured in India. Our product is a new electronic music interface for guitarists. The product allows guitarists to play any (percussion) instrument by attaching our hardware interface on their guitar. The innovation is in its design form and device integration.
Vivek Pandey We present an idea with demonstration of a unique thin film based MEMS pressure sensor which is highly robust, has high sensitivity and is flexible. Its applications may range from biomedical devices like plantar pressure sensor, low cost pulse rate detection system and neonatal weighing mat to offshore pressure measurement system as it needs no additional sealing as well. The process and the design of device are innovative and rule out complications of currently available MEMS sensor fabrication.

Mr Kunal Khanna and Prof Jayesh Bellare Dr. Jayesh R. Bellare is full Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, I.I.T. Mumbai since July 1990, and visiting Professor at U.D.C.T., Bombay University in 1999. He did his schooling at the Bombay Scottish School and his B.Tech. in chemical engineering from I.I.T. Mumbai (where he stood first with Silver Medal in 1982). He earned his Ph.D. (in 1988) in Chemical Engineering and Materials Science from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, U.S.A. for his work on cryoelectron microscopy and polarized optical microscopy of colloidal surfactant systems (with Professors H. Ted Davis and L. E. Scriven). He was visiting researcher at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Technion Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel (1984, with Professor Y. Talmon). He was post-doctoral fellow in Mathematics and in Polymer Science and Engineering at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, U.S.A. (1989) and in Materials Science and Engineering at M.I.T., Cambridge, U.S.A. (1990) on microphase separated copolymers, electron microscopy of their morphology, and simulation of their interfaces (with Professors David Hoffman and E. L. Thomas). He has several international publications, conference presentations, and patents. Bone loss and failure from injury and disease are significant clinical problems.Treatment is by auto/allo/xenografts, which are limited by donor scarcity, high risk of rejection, and disease transfer.We have developed a 3-D porous visco-elastic scaffolds that rapidly regenerates high quality bone.

Prof. Sanjeeva Srivastava Dr. Sanjeeva Srivastava is the Group Leader for the Proteomics Laboratory at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay India (IITB). He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Alberta and post-doc from the Harvard Medical School in the area of proteomics, stress physiology and has specialized expertise in applications of data enabled sciences in global health, developing country and resource limited settings. Dr. Srivastava has taught proteomics courses at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and is the recipient of several awards including the National Young Scientist Award (Canada), Young Scientist Awards (Department of Atomic Energy and Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences India and the Department of Science and Technology India) and the Apple Research Technology Support Award (UK). His name is included in Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare in Nov 2011 edition of Marquis Who’s Who, USA. Autoantibody screening from serum/blood samples of brain tumors like glioma and meningioma was performed for identifying early diagnostic minimally invasive biomarkers. The platform used for this study was the Human Proteome Arrays harboring 17,000 full length human proteins which is the highest number of human proteins studied for autoantibody response in these tumors. Identified biomarkers could help diagnose and segregate inter-grade heterogeneity as well as prognostic outcome of subjects depending on survival dependent variables like SVZ positive/negative tumors or IDH1 mutation positive/ wild type in glioma.
Ajay Suryavanshi, Kunal Khanna, Prof. Jayesh Bellare and Prof. Rohit Srivastava I am Ajay Vijay Suryavanshi belonging to Mumbai. I completed my graduation in pharmacy (B. Pharm.) from Mumbai University with distinction and post graduation in Pharmaceutical Technology Biotechnology. Currently, I am working with Prof. Rohit Srivastava, Associate professor, DBB, on ICMR funded project entitled, ‘development of biocomposite material for orthopedic applications’. Biomaterials, nanocomposites, novel drug delivery, orthopedics, etc. are some of my areas of interest. My hobbies are singing, dancing, trekking, etc. We are presenting low-cost indigenously developed biodegradable bone screw from as-prepared nanocomposite biomaterial with mechanical strength matching human bone-soft tissue, high biocompatibility and osteoconduction, thus deeper market penetration. This biocomposite has wider application in other implantable orthopedic devices also viz. suture anchors, pins, wires, staples, tacks, arrows, washers, plates, etc.
Debjani Paul Debjani Paul joined the department as an assistant professor in 2012. She is also an associate member of the Wadhwani Research Centre for Bioengineering, IIT Bombay. She has a PhD in physics (2005) from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. She has done postdoctoral research in the Curie Institute and the University of Cambridge. She also had a short stint at the pharma industry prior to joining IIT Bombay. The product is a portable, inexpensive and high-magnification (~ 2000X) smartphone microscope for diagnosis of blood disorders (e.g. sickle cell disease, malaria, etc.) at the point-of-care. The microscope is currently being field tested to image blood from sickle cell disease patients in Gujarat.

Dr. Sanjeeva Srivastava is Associate Professor and Group Leader of Proteomics Laboratory at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay India, a guest professor at the Central South University, China and a Visiting Scientist at the Biodesign Institute, Arizona. He obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Alberta and post-doc from the Harvard Medical School in the area of proteomics, and has specialized expertise in applications of data enabled sciences in global health, developing country and resource limited settings. Dr. Srivastava is recipient of several national and international awards, including “Award for Teaching Excelence-2014”.

We have started proteomics e-learning programs and developed virtual lab, animations and video courses on proteomics. The need for such training is especially felt in the discipline of proteomics where clinical studies involving differential protein expression are carried out on platforms like 2D-DIGE, mass spectrometry etc. Virtual proteomics labs and e-learning resources are thus developed which could provide theoretical information followed by training to perform the sophisticated experiments using simulations and remote triggered experiments equivalent to an individualized hands-on training.

This project presents three initiatives – providing digital online content for design, a social networking environment for design and higher learning and creating a digital resource database on design.

The overall objective is the creation and development of new learning environments related to design that will provide greater access and enhancement to acquisition of critical knowledge, skills, and abilities for economic and social development in our country.

Pushpadeep Pushpdeep Mishra is a Bioinformatician with interest in Drug Discovery. He is a Project Manager at IITB for Virtual Labs; this is an MHRD NMEICT project aiming to deliver quality lab instruction to engineering students around the country. He is leading the outreach and development program accross 30 nodal engineering colleges, helping to bring innovation in education technology. Santosh Noronha is a Chemical Engineer at IIT Bombay with interests in Bioprocess Technology. He is the Coordinator of the Healthcare Research Consortium at IIT Bombay. He is also the Principal Investigator at IITB for Virtual Labs; this is an MHRD NMEICT project aiming to deliver quality lab instruction to engineering students around the country as well as to nurture device innovation at a set of 30 nodal engineering colleges.
