Dr. PJ Dilip Kumar served as Director General of Forests, head of the Indian Forest Services and Special Secretary to Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India. He is currently Senior Fellow of ICSSR and Adjunct Professor with the Centre for Ecological Economics & Natural Resources (CEENR) at the Institute for Social & Economic Change, Bangalore where his interest is sustainable management of natural resources. During his early years in service, as Divisional Forest Officer, he was responsible for confronting timber smuggling by bring in law enforcement through raids and recovering stolen timber in Karnataka. With emphasis on the importance of creating a balance between the need for conservation with the need for development, he was involved in the direction of policy, regulation and supervision to restore forests, build people’s organisations, livelihoods, set-up NGO support programs and deal with issues to bring clarity for economically disadvantaged groups. As a student at IIT Bombay, he took keen interest in tree plantation on the campus, a voluntary effort of students and faculty members, that is responsible for the green campus that we see today. He is an avid writer and blogger on environmental issues.He received an M.Sc in Chemistry from Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay and a PhD in Forest Economics from the University Wales, UK.
